Internet Explorer 8 gets a 20/100 on the Acid Test 3
March 20th, 2009As some of you may know, there is a new Internet Explorer 8 released 1 day ago. I didn’t test the beta version and didn’t download yet the new one (maybe when “Multiples Explorers” program add the IE8). But taking a look at some of the advantages? new features? of the 8 version makes me sad, very sad.
I cann’t believe how Microsoft is hurting himself. They are losing the browsers war, why they don’t want to do a good job? What are the problems? Well maybe it’s because a lot of “windows” sites only supports hacks and tricks made for other Internet Explorer older versions or else I cann’t understand nothing.
It’s true the new version is faster, safer and better but it’s not enough.
Taking a look to some posts we can see how Internet Explorer 8 improves his stats on Acid Test 3 (a few more points from IE 7) but…
The new Internet Explorer 8 only gets a poor 20/100 on Acid Test 3.
There you have a comparison to browsers:
- Opera 9.64 gets 85/100
- Chrome 1.0.154.48 gets 78/100
- Safari 3.1 (525.13) 75/100
- FireFox 3.0.7 gets 70/100
- Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13 gets 12/100
So now we, the developers have not 2, but 3 Microsoft browsers in the air that don’t follow the standards and we are going to be fu**ed while Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome and others don’t eat more of this market. Hopefully at least this will decrease the use of Internet Explorer 6.
If you want to download the Internet Explorer 8 new version, you can download it from the official website.
What do you think about the new version?

I think Acid 3 test some stuff of a working draft of html5 standard (Canvas…).
It’s cool to see the other browsers such as Opera implement some great stuff about this standard (video, canvas…) but, at time, the priority is to support actual webstandards and IE8 developpers had made a hard work with this version.
@Christophe I am with you, I have installed and tested the new version in my computer but it isn’t enough, we need more and they know it.
CSS3 was not a target for 8.0 release of IE. You would know this if you bothered to help with the year long public beta test, or followed the public development blog. IE9 and the new JS engine would undoubtedly support more CSS3 (which itself is incomplete), as well as SVG.
Does IE8 implement the W3C event model?
@Donal In the IE8 Beta 1 it didn’t support the W3C model… dont know about the final release! Anyone?
I’ll stop supporting IE for now and add block to my sites if someone is trying to access those whit crappy-IE! Lose some users? Well maybe but if you are so stupid using IE then you’re not welcome!

Safari 4 —— 100/100
the best!!!!!!
I’m new here… all of your previous post were great! I like your tutorials. Hopefully I won’t spam you comment anyway IE makes me headache when we wanted to make a cross browser compatible website. Another new IE make us do extra work again
@wk
yeah you are right, more IE it mean more work to do, and more headache you have..

hahaha really nice.
IE8 supports CSS3 and what is better is that is supports the use of CSS tables which is more flexible than HTML tables. IE8 is also getting rid of Document Type Declarations which makes things much easier. I don’t understand what is so hard about implementing the correct box model into IE?
Yes IE8 may have scored extremely low and I think IE8 needs to seriously look at making things easier for developers. I think with some research you may find some things to like about IE8!
Now There is news, IE9
the priority is to support actual webstandards and IE8 developpers had made a hard work with this version.
